workshop
This workshop is designed to assist
carers to gain an understanding of how they can improve
their coping skills when caring for someone with a mental
illness.
Additionally the workshop will help carers to develop
insight and strategies to improve their coping. This will
require some skillful facilitation and coordination of
content, activities and video.
Workshop Modules
Supporting someone with a mental
illness: Explores fosteting interdependence in the
person with the mental illness and generally supporting
someone on their treatment, care and rehabilitation.
Communicating in relation to mental
illness: Help us gain skills, learning effective
listening skills, learning how to reflect meaning sharing
your own feelings in a non-confrontational manner and
communicating effectively with various health professionals.
Coping with disturbing behavior:
Helps in dealing with angry outbursts, potential violence
and indications of suicide. Understanding of hallucinations,
delusions, mood swings and other signs of mental illness.
Looking after yourself: Looks
at ways of maintaining your own health and emotional wellbeing,
planning ahead for problems and accessing outside support.

It is recommended that participants
read ARAFMI (QLD)'s 'Coping with mental health problems,'
a handbook for family carers (1996). This can be purchased
from the ARAFMI Hunter office for $10, or members may
borrow it from the ARAFMI Hunter library.
